ISLE-GAP was conceived in 1985 by a group of independent school librarians in Southern California to encourage the philosophy of resource sharing. It was the desire of the participating schools to expose students and faculty to the range of information available to them beyond the collections housed in their individual libraries. With the financial assistance of the W. M. Keck Foundation in 1985 and 1987, and the commitment of all participating schools, library catalogs were automated, staff was trained and a stronger inter-library network was established.

Now sharing a networked catalog with over a quarter million records, the sixteen member libraries share resources and expenses, and meet regularly to exchange ideas, solutions, and to enhance the services offered at each individual library.
